There are a great number of lessons I want to teach my daughter throughout her life. Depending upon the lesson that I wish to teach her I will likely use a different method of teaching. For example, this weekend my daughter asked for a second time to learn to tie her shoes. This is something she had attempted a few weeks ago, but gave up on sometime during the process. So last night as we sat on the couch I helped her over and over to do the rabbit ears and slip the loop through and pull. In this lesson I had to repeat each step and allow her to practice, praising her along the way.
Not of the lessons in life that I must teach her will go this same way. There will be lesson that don’t require so much hands on learning, but more of learning by example. She will have to learn to be a good friend, by my example. She will hopefully learn to be a Godly wife per my example.
Then there are lessons that she’ll have to learn on her own, the hard way. Lessons like failing and having to learn to get back up, brush herself off and try again. As a parent I must not be afraid to allow her to fail. Or otherwise she’ll never learn the lessons that she must learn from doing so.
My mom attempted to teach me to cook. I often failed at my attempts to make her breakfast. I remember a day when I was going to surprise my mom with breakfast and the biscuits turned out shaped like pancakes and too hard to do anything with but throw them like a Frisbee. Even the dog turned his nose up to them. My mom later learned that I indeed did learn how to cook from her it just took some time for this talent to appear in my life. After I got married and had to of course!
My daughter and yours will learn her way through life through a series of lessons. Lessons that take up hours in our busy schedules, lessons that take years of her watching our every move, and lessons that cause her sleepless night and lots of tears.
